Are my visitors bots?
Every Shopify store is visited by bots multiple times per day. Some of these bots are Shopify's own bots that check your shop's pagespeed. If you're running ads, ad network bots will check your shop for banned content, pagespeed, browser compatibility and more.
If you're unsure if a particular session is from a bot, here's how to check:
- Do the sessions in question all have the same or similar IP address (e.g., the first two sets of numbers are identical)? If so, they may be bots from the same data center.
- Try running the IP address through a bot detection service like https://www.ipqualityscore.com/bot-management/bot-detection-check. Services like this grade the IP address on the likelihood of it originating from a data center.
- Finally, try checking the location of the session's IP address using a service like https://www.ip2location.com/ Sometimes these sites will say if the IP address is owned by a Google or Amazon data center. Alternatively, if the IP addresses are all from the same city, then that's another indicator that the visitors are bots from a data center.
- Is the visitor's operating system showing as Linux? Linux is the operating system most often used by bots.
